About

Programme Description

The West of Scotland radiology training scheme is the largest in Scotland with over 90 clinical radiology trainees and 5 interventional radiology fellows.

In year one, the aims are to obtain a broad basic grounding in plain radiography interpretation, fluoroscopy procedures and general ultrasound with opportunities for experience in CT, MRI and basic intervention. There is a structured first year teaching programme covering physics and radiological anatomy, geared towards the FRCR1 examination.

Second and third year rotations are designed to cover the core curriculum and include blocks in paediatric radiology (RHC), neuroradiology (INS) and and district general hospitals in addition to the main teaching hospitals.  There are subspecialty based, structured teaching programmes for the FRCR 2A examination. Following completion of FRCR 2A there is an organised FRCR 2B viva course.

The training programme is coordinated through the local Postgraduate Training Committee, which has two trainee representatives.

Research, audit, teaching and management opportunities

Subspecialty training occurs in years 4 and 5. Each hospital provides a detailed list of training modules available and, within limits, trainees are allowed to choose modules geared towards their training requirements and interests. Subspecialty training is available in all modalities including breast imaging, musculoskeletal imaging, respiratory imaging, gastrointestinal imaging, nuclear medicine including PET-CT, oncological imaging, paediatric imaging, none vascular interventional radiology, neuroradiology and radiology research. The subspecialty blocks are 4 months in duration but can be organised back to back to increase exposure to a particular subspecialty or hospital.

Audit/quality improvement is part of the core curriculum and is actively encouraged. Research is actively encouraged in all subspecialty modules. There are specific research opportunities in neuroradiology and oncological imaging.
